10. Harvest Records

A harvest record captures what came off one hive, on the day you took it. Recording the actual weight of what you extracted — which often happens later, and often mixes frames from more than one hive — is a separate step covered in 10.5 Recording an Extraction.

10.1 Adding a Harvest

There are two ways to start a harvest record:

Open the hive you're harvesting and tap Harvest on its detail screen — the hive and apiary are already filled in.
From the navigation bar, tap Harvests, then tap +. Select an apiary first, then a hive within it.

Enter the overall quantity harvested and select the unit — lbs, kg, or frames.
Select the honey type (e.g. Wildflower, Clover, Manuka, etc.).
Select the grade.
If the unit isn't frames, enter the frame count separately. If the unit is frames, skip this — see 10.2 below.
Optionally enter the moisture content percentage.
Add any notes.
Tap Save.

10.2 Recording What You Removed

Below the overall quantity, add a Yield Entry for each box role and size you're pulling from the hive — for example, two medium supers. For each entry, choose:

Box Role — Brood Box or Super.
Box Size — Shallow, Medium, Deep, or Other. Any role can be any size; a medium brood box and a medium super are tracked separately.
Box Count — how many boxes of that role and size.
Quantity and its Unit — when the unit is frames, this number is the frame count. You won't be asked to enter it again.
Actual Weight (optional) — leave this blank until you've actually extracted and weighed the honey. Fill it in directly only if you're extracting this hive alone and know the weight immediately.

Note: When you enter a frame count, Bee Inspector shows an estimated possible yield based on typical honey capacity for that box size. This is an estimate for planning and comparing hives — not a substitute for the actual weight you measure at extraction.

10.3 Removing Boxes When You Harvest

Once you've selected a hive, a "Remove harvested boxes from hive" switch appears. Turn it on if you're physically taking boxes off the hive, and pick exactly what came off:

If this hive still has individually tracked supers (added before you started using Boxes / Equipment Configuration on it), you'll see a checklist of those actual supers, oldest-added first. Check the ones you removed.
Otherwise you'll see a quantity picker per equipment type. Tap + to select how many of each you removed, up to what's actually on the hive.

Either way, the removal is recorded against the equipment's real frame capacity, not just its role and size. Leave the switch off to record the harvest without changing what's currently on the hive.

Replacing equipment after harvest: if you removed anything, a "Harvest Recorded" dialog offers to add a replacement once you save. Pull a full super, set an empty one back on immediately, and confirm the quantity for each equipment type (pre-filled to match what you removed, but editable). It's recorded as a new addition with reason "Replaced after harvest." Tap Skip if you're not putting anything back on right away.

You can also add or remove boxes any time, independent of a harvest, from the hive's Boxes / Equipment Configuration card — see 5.5 Boxes / Equipment Configuration.

10.4 Honey Grades and Variety Names

Grade	Description
Grade A	Premium quality — good color, flavor, and moisture content.
Grade B	Good quality with minor variation in color or flavor.
Grade C	Acceptable quality.
Ungraded	Not formally assessed.

Alongside Honey Type, an optional "Specific Variety Name" field lets you name a local varietal that isn't in the standard list — Tupelo or Sourwood, for example.

10.5 Recording an Extraction

An extraction is the actual, measured result once honey comes out of the extractor — which may combine frames from several harvests, possibly from more than one hive or apiary. From the Harvests screen, tap the flask icon in the top bar to open Record Extraction.

Select one or more harvests that aren't part of an extraction yet.
Set the extraction date.
Choose the honey type — if your selected harvests don't all share the same type, Bee Inspector suggests Wildflower rather than guessing a specific variety, since you don't control the exact proportion each source contributed. You can still choose a specific variety if you're confident in it.
Enter the actual weight your scale shows, and the unit (lbs or kg).
Add any notes, then tap Record Extraction.

Note: A measured extraction weight is only credited back to a specific hive's productivity history when every harvest in that extraction came from the same hive. Once an extraction pools frames from more than one hive, the actual weight stays at the extraction level — each hive's own estimated yield (from its Yield Entries) is what tracks its productivity over time.

10.6 Viewing Extractions

Tap the receipt icon in the Harvests screen's top bar to see every extraction you've recorded: date, actual weight, honey type, and which harvests contributed to it. The Harvest Records summary card also shows a running "Extracted" total across every recorded extraction, alongside the existing Total Harvests and Total Weight figures.

10.7 Harvest in Analytics

Harvest totals appear in the Analytics screen by day and by hive, letting you compare production across your operation over time.
